The Portuguese Sheepdog's coat is either long and
silky or has a subtle wave to it. There is no undercoat on it. Yellow-red
chestnut, grey, fawn, wolf, or black are some of the colours available. Except
for white spots on the breast, a few white hairs are OK, but patches of white
hairs are not. Long hair covers the forelimbs in a symmetrical pattern. It has
a beard, giving it a more aged appearance. With a pleasant look, the eyes are
round and black. The medium-sized ears are normally hung down the sides of the
cheeks, however they are occasionally clipped. In various European nations,
cropping is prohibited. The dog looks to be fairly high on the legs for his
size. His feet are well suited to hard terrain.
His legs are powerful, and he has a large chest.
The dog's hair is longer on the head, giving him bangs and an unkempt
appearance. It has a broad, robust head with a large snout as well as powerful
jaws and teeth. The dog's tail is pointed and reaches the hocks. The ideal Co da
Serra de Aires is "exceptionally clever and very energetic,"
dedicated to the flock and the shepherd yet suspicious of strangers, and a good
night guarding dog, according to the breed standard.

Dog History
The Co da Serra de Aires is a Portuguese breed
that was bred as a livestock guardian, sheepdog, and all-around farm dog. This
is a more recent breed, said to have emerged during the previous century.
Researchers believe the Co da Serra de Aires evolved from a mix between the
Briard and the Pyrenean Sheepdog, while its exact origins are unknown. The
Count de Castro Guimaraes brought Briards to breed with indigenous Portuguese
mountain canines and maybe the Pyrenean Sheepdog. According to some locals, the
Catalan Sheepdog was also utilised in the creation of the Co da Serra de Aires.
They were mostly found in the Alentejo region's Serra de Aires Mountains.
These dogs were observed diligently serving local
shepherds during the majority of the 1900s, but their numbers rapidly dropped
in the 1970s. In the late 1980s, local breeders began attempting to resuscitate
the breed, and by the end of the 1990s, the population had significantly
restored. The Alentejo area still has the highest number of Co da Serra de
Aires guarding and driving vast flocks of goats, sheep, cattle, pigs, or
horses. The breed standard was produced by a group of local breeders between
1930 and 1932, when the Clube Portugues de Canicultura was founded. The
standard and breed were formally recognised by the Federation Cynologique
Internationale in 1945.The Co da Serra de Aires was recognised by the United
Kennel Club's register in 2006. They are yet to be accepted into the Foundation
Stock Service of the American Kennel Club.

relatively new breed, there isn't a lot of information on its health. The Co da
Serra de Aires, on the other hand, appears to be a generally robust and
resilient breed. Working injuries and parasites such as ticks and mites, which
can be caught in the field, are the most common issues found in this breed.
Routine vaccines and dental cleaning are required
for the Cao da Serra de Aires, but health issues such as fleas, ticks, and
worms require specific treatment.

and healthy, just like it is for people, is common sense. Keep an eye on her
nutrition, make sure she gets plenty of exercise, wash her teeth and coat on a
regular basis, and call us or a pet emergency hospital if anything appears out
of the ordinary (see "What to Watch For" below). Make careful to
follow the checkup and vaccine plan that we propose for her. We'll give her the
appropriate "check-ups" and test for illnesses and ailments that are
frequent in Portuguese Sheepdogs at this time. Signing up for pet health insurance
is another crucial step in caring for your pet. Throughout her life, she will
undoubtedly require medical tests and operations, and she will have a pet.
As you would a kid, keep an eye on your pet.
Close doors, tidy up after yourself, and section off rooms as needed. This will

Feeding

a medium-sized breed with a lot of energy. This breed may benefit from a single
daily meal of high-quality dog food or homemade food. Inquire with your
veterinarian about serving quantities and frequency.
